To maintain the privacy of its users, Whatsapp provides end-to-end encryption by default. This feature offers the recipient a good opportunity. The sender will be able to see messages and no one in between. Whatsapp is now planning to provide the users an option to protect their Whatsapp backups with the help of end-to-end encryption as well. However, people can back up their WhatsApp messages through cloud-based services like iCloud and Google Drive. 

WhatsApp does not have access to all these backups because they are secured with individual cloud-based storage services. However, now, if people go for the end-to-end encryption backups once available. Then neither the backup service nor WhatsApp can access their backups or backup encryption keys. 

How Did Whatsapp End-To-End Encryption And Backups Work?

End-to-end encrypted WhatsApp chat backups work the same way messages are conveyed. It happens in a fully private and secure way on Whatsapp. It would be best if you created a password, or you may make a 64-digit encryption key. This encryption is used to protect and encrypt the cloud backups on both iCloud and Google Drive. 

The encryption key and password are stored in the Whatsapp device itself, which shows no one will be able to access your cloud backups. However, when you enter the encryption key/password, the messages can be transferred and decrypted to another device from the cloud. Facebook has told about all the technicalities related to encryption cloud backup in an official blog post. 

However, the company explains that they developed an advanced system to store the password/encrypted keys on the devices. It takes the benefits of a hardware security module (HSM). It is a special hardware part on iOS and Android devices to store the keys. Likewise, Apple stores the Faxe ID data on Android stores and Secure Enclave private keys in HSM, so WhatsApp creates the same method here.  

Who Can Access Whatsapp End-To-End Encryption Cloud Backups?

No one other than you can access the WhatsApp end-to-end encryption cloud backups. However, not even Google, Whatsapp, or Apple can access your password and encryption key. These unique key stores in your device depend on the local features. If you memorize the password or know the encryption key, you will be able to decrypt your messages. 

How Can You “Turn On” The Whatsapp End-To-End Encrypted Backup Chats?

1. Open WhatsApp and click on the three dots at the top right corner. Then open “Settings” and move to the chats.

2. Next, you have to tap on the chat backup option at the bottom of the screen. Then you will see an end-to-end encryption backup option below the backup button. You have to click on it. If this feature is not showing on your screen, you have to wait for the opportunity to arrive on your device. 

3. Next, click on the “Turn on” to start the end-to-end encryption option. Next, you have to make a password based on a 64-digits encryption key to secure your cloud backups. It is a more easy and quick option for you. 

4. After creating the password for your backups, you must always choose 6 characters and 1 letter for the password. However, you can not access your messages. Even Google or Whatsapp will not be able to decrypt your cloud for backing up as there is no mechanism to store the password. 

5. When you set up your password, you have to go to the next screen and tap “Create.” It will start the process of encryption in the background. When you have done the process, your Google drive and Whatsapp messages will be encrypted with your new password. 

Why Is Whatsapp End-To-End Encryption Important? Does It Protect Us?

End-to-end encryption is essential as it will give users and recipients complete security for their files and emails from when users deliver the data to it will receive by the recipient. This feature will also ensure that no third person can read your exchanged messages. Services like Yahoo, Gmail, and Microsoft enable the users to access the user’s content on their server as these providers have copies of these decrypted keys. 

As a matter of the fact that these providers will read users, files, and emails, in the case of Google, it has possession of decryption keys that enabled them in the past to give the Google account holder targeted ads. So in an end-to-end encryption system, providers never gain access to decryption keys. 

What Are The Advantages Of Whatsapp End-To-End Encryption?

Recently, NSA has issued guidelines on how to use collaboration services. At the top of this list is the suggestion that collaboration services engage in end-to-end encryption. End-to-end encryption includes the highest level of security for itself and its technologies in the NSA list. Following the guidelines shows that users can decrease the risk of exposure. 


Ensure That Your Information Is Secure From Hacks 

With end-to-end encryption, only you will have access to your information or the private keys to unlock the data. However, data on the server will not be read by the hackers as they do not have the keys that can decrypt the information.

Protects The Security Of Their Users 

Providers like Microsoft and Google will be able to read your data when you are using their server, data decryption. If your information decrypts on another server, third parties like hackers will read it.

Provides Security To Admins 

As admins do not have the description keys to decrypt the data, any attack by the hackers or from a third party that specifically targets the administration will come up short. 


The end-to-end encrypted backup feature of Whatsapp offers users to set either a password that they want or a 64-digit encryption key that only users know. However, WhatsApp users cannot restore their backups somehow if they lose their Whatsapp chats or if they may forget their key or password. The process enables the end-to-end encryption feature to be the same for iOS and Android.
